Powers Other Than Djinni Supernatural
(re The Fire Man and a Fiery Lady)
While the Djinni is the basis for all of my Mystery Lake Novels, there are those among us who have mysterious powers that seem to defy logic. In The Fire Man and a Fiery Lady, the hero and heroine are both part Djinn but in fact neither of them has inherited the Djinni superpowers. Some individuals seem to have an affinity for certain things, like water witchers drawn to underground streams, clairvoyants who ‘see’, witches themselves (if you’re a believer in magic, white or black), and those with a sixth sense that just naturally guides them.
In The Fire Man and a Fiery Lady, hero Jack Carpenter has that sixth sense that draws him to locate victims through the zero visibility of smoke. Heroine Margiana Lovelock, senses impending fires as though fire has an affinity to her. The Djinni-of-the-Lake foresees events about to unfold (rather than having to create them as he’s blamed for doing in each volume of the Mystery Lake Series). In Book 3, The Djinni-of-the-Lake makes an appearance to the heroine as well as to the reader—it’s about time, don’t you think? He’ll star in his own story when I get to Book 4, the upcoming, Princess Shirra and the Banished Prince.
Meanwhile, here is a bit of backstory from The Fire Man and a Fiery Lady to pique your interest. Note the supposed misspelling of fireman (or firefighter – a job) vs. Fire Man (a unique informal title bestowed to one of unusual prowess irregardless of job—a man of fire), is the best way I can describe the difference (to my way of thinking).
Jack has gained his notoriety though amazing rescues of victims no one else could locate. He’s touted in newspapers, fondly called The Fire Man. He can’t explain it himself—he just has it.
Then I throw in an awareness to another of the elements, this one frightening and unwelcome, that comes to him in a time of impending doom. It is this one (I’m not telling you what it is here), that gives him grief. He has to overcome it to rescue his lady love, which is of course what the story is about (love conquers all), though maybe in a backwards kind of way. And, he has to prove it three times over, including to himself.
All this while fingers point at a prime arson suspect, the vivacious lady he’s falling for, while he struggles to keep his own secrets from discovery. She has secrets and attractions of her own, making it difficult to stay objective after they’re thrown together with no way to separate themselves from the situation, giving rise to suspicion that doesn’t all stem from outsiders.
Read The Fire Man and a Fiery Lady if you’re hooked on the Mystery Lake stories.
